Parking Lot

When you come to the Zen Center on evenings and weekends, you can use the Safeway Credit Union parking conveniently located near the Zendo. Access to this lot is from Hawthorne Blvd. Many of you may remember the long running issue use of this lot raised with the Credit Union, and the with the city. There is new management at the Credit Union that brings a desire to work closely with the neighborhood, and this made all the difference. We now have permission to use this lot, so along with the Artisan Dental Lab lot (across Hawthorne from the Safeway lot) and the Chiropractic lot we finally have more than adequate parking.

Bountiful Bodhi Bazaar is a Success Again

The Bountiful Bodhi Bazaar was held Saturday, Nov. 24. Our Sangha members and friends are full of talent and surprises. So many stepped forward with generous donations for our "Bountiful Bodhi Bazaar" and delighted many people with nice items for gifts.

We undoubtedly will forget someone, but we'd like to thank everyone for their donations: Gay Kei'un Clardy; Sylvan Rainwater; David Kakumyo Lowe; Jackie Dyrhaug; John Rippey; Alison Shin'ei Brown; Claudine Kavanaugh; Jennifer Pagliaro; John Wong; Gwen Kisei Martin; Steve Wilson; Bess Yuishin Clark, Mari McKay, Shannon Starke, and Rosie and Kate McNulty. Karen Sokyo Swallow was the organizer and Rene Berblinger played classical guitar. As of this writing, the rough estimate is a profit over $3500!

Rohatsu

The Rohatsu sesshin in celebration of the Buddha's enlightenment was held Dec. 3-9 at Camp Adams once more.

Thanks to Jay Dosho van Sant who served as shuso for one last time and the many, many people who donated time, vehicles and labor to create a temple "from a blade of grass" out in the woods. Kyogen led the sesshin, offering Dharma Talks on Dogen's "Daigo" or "Great Enlightenment." Kakumyo Lowe was Precentor, Gwen Kisei Martin was Jisha, while Sallie Jiko Tisdale served as Tenzo, with assistance from Domyo Sater.

Finishing Touches

Stained Glass Windows Restored

For months we've been showing you photos of the Zendo being scrapped, scrubbed, and prepped for painting, with views of the east wall with the panelling down, and the old, painted over windows.

Left: Jukai group picture taken in 1999 showing how the east wall looked when it was paneled.

Below left: May 2001-east wall just after the paneling was torn off, Years ago, the original windows had been painted over.

At times it looked like we were sitting in a ruin. The final touches involved restoring the stained glass windows that had been covered over with paneling, and preparing trim to match what had been in place originally.

Below: June, 2001- East wall has been repainted, and windows have been boarded up while the stained glass is being restored. (Note: Sean, who appears in the article in StillPoint is the dancer on the far right, demonstrating the versitility of his dramatic flair.)

Now, the restoration is complete, and the zendo looks brighter and more spacious. In the morning, the sunlight floods the room. (--On sunny days, that is. On our many rainy days, we get the beautiful light filtered by rain and clouds. They don't call us "Dharma Rain" for nothing!)

Above right: December 2001-The zendo as it looks with the windows in place. Click on image for a larger view.

Much of this work was done by Anthony Stevens (shown,at left, standing under his handiwork), who matched the wood and stain to wonderful effect.

Below: Various views of the zendo, now that the windows have been reinstalled. Note: this month's news page is pretty heavy on the graphics-side. In order to get this page to load faster, we have used small images. You can click on any of the images below to get a larger, better quality image.
