Dharma Rain - About the Soto Zen Temple

About Dharma Rain Zen Center

Daruma painting
Dharma Rain Zen Center is a Soto Zen temple for lay practice. It is dedicated to helping people cultivate and realize Zen Buddhism in normal, everyday American lives. The temple is committed to maintaining an open and accessible atmosphere that is, at the same time, conducive to a deep, intimate, and well-balanced practice.

See the FAQ for basic information about Dharma Rain, or check out the current events listing and calendar.

Our teachers Kyogen and Gyokuko help students realize their own potential in practice. They give classes, do private counseling, point out mistakes, and teach by example.

During most of the year, the Center operates a daily schedule of morning and evening meditation periods, as well as offering classes, workshops and residential practice. The priests are available by appointment for counseling on spiritual matters.

Dharma Rain is nationally known for its Children’s Programs, especially the Dharma School. The manual, Sharing the Dharma with Children explains in depth the history, philosophy, structure, and curriculum of the school.

While Dharma Rain is primarily a temple for lay practice, several monks reside here and provide support to the work of the temple. There are also Lay Teachers, who have been recognized by a teacher as achieving a high level of integrated practice.

DRZC is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. A mandala of councils and teams, including an elected board of directors, keeps the community involved in the running of the temple.
